Hiking from Atlantic to Gulf of Mexico questions

I was a huge backpacker when I was younger. I backpacked all over The
Canadian arctic and Alaska. It has been a few years since I did anything
serious. I live in Ocala and I have been doing a lot of day hikes
adding up a lot of miles getting in shape. I am planning to hike across
Florida via the Marjorie Harris Car Greenway. It looks like it starts at
the Saint John's River. I want to start in St. John's County. I want to
dip my foot in the Atlantic, hike to the Gulf and stick my foot in the
water there. I am planning to go in either March or April. I was
wondering if anyone here has done that hike. I am also "gearing" up. All
my backpacks and tents etc are all at my mom and dad's house in Ohio. I
was thinking of getting a frameless backpack, big enough to stuff a
sleeping bag into, some food, water and some extra clothes and hitting
the trail. Wondering about a good route from St. Augustine, I was
wondering if anyone knows of any place to get decent used equipment?
Wonder if I really need a tent?

John, a group of gentlemen did that a few years ago ... they were all over 80 and called it the "Over 80 Cross Florida" hike. Kenneth Smith, who's a member on this site, organized the trip. If you get in touch with him he can give you logistical details. They went from Flagler Beach to the end of the Withlacoochee Bay Trail south of Inglis, on the Gulf.

Yes, you need a tent unless you're hammock camping or tarping.
You might get used equipment by checking WhiteBlaze.com or ask around here.

okay thanks for the advice. I value your advice Sandra. Being a newbie to hiking in Florida I can use all the education I can get. I am going to have to check out some of your books. Is there any one in particluar that deals with the areas of the trip I am planning? I met Kenneth Smith a few nights ago he recommended several of your books.
