Thought this group might appreciate the humor in this sign.

Here is my then 12 year old Julia at Hidden Pond in ONF in 2006. When are kids ready for backpacking? Depends on their interests and upbringing. I was not ready till I was 45! hah!

I started my boys out when they were 8yr which made them strong enough to carry some of their own gear (limited). I'm thinking about letting my daughter next year when she turns 7 mainly because she really really wants to go. I'll limit her to some of the shorter hikes (3 miles or less per day) at first to see how she likes it.

How hold should a child be before you would think about taking them backpacking?

Hi, my name is Joann. I'm divorced, mother of three boys ages 10, 7, and 4. I am interested in hiking with my boys, but also hiking more challenging, longer trails on the weekends the boys are not with me. I am a newbie hiker.
I work at an elementary school as the librarian and technology coordinator/support. I also enjoy camping and snorkeling.

Hello Eveyone! New to the forum and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Jeff and I am a scoutmaster of Troop 404 in Ormond Beach. I stumbled across this site when looking for overnight backpacking ideas for the troop. We have done the Hopkins Prairie to Juniper Hike twice now and have plans for another hike in February. I will start a thread in the discussion forum for ideas on new hikes. TIA Jeff
