My Florida Hikes

Sharing the best of Florida hiking

I am posting an album of some of my favorite shots I have taken in the last 6 years. Not all shots are of Florida mind you. The point being is you don't need and expensive multi-lense setup to get great shots. All of these pictures were taken on a point and shoot 5 meg Kodak. With todays P&S camera's and the multiple settings they come with;one should focus their attention on composure of the scene and lighting. Get good at those and you audience will appreciate you photo's even more. I have upgraded from the P&S recently now using an Olympus Evolt 510 kit I have since added a zoom lense and I am still under 1k for total cost of this outfit. Nikon and Canon are great but not cost effective for entry level SLR's. Just some thot's..let me know what yoy think.

Good job! I have been shooting with the Olympus E-500 using the kit lenses. Great value and excellent pictures. For point and shoot I use my wife's Canon Power Shot SD750. Neat little camera, just like your Kodak. Right now I am struggling with printing. Treated myself to an iMac 24, never having used Apple before. I have a Huey calibration device and an Epson R800 printer. Have not been able to get the color right. Anyone have any ideas?. The switch from PC to Mac requires some effort on my part.

I have both a Canon digital Elph and a Nikon D70 that I use for my nature photography. I like the Elph because it fits easily in my pocket and is lightweight. However, when I want or need to shoot more and better pics I love my D70 (although I'm planning on upgrading to the D90 later this year).

I agree that composure of the scene and lighting are very important. And, when photographing nature, sometimes you need speed, too! I like to get a different perspective at times, maybe lying down on the ground or standing on a tall object and looking down, just to see what it looks like from another angle.

Your photos are quite nice and well done.

I have used Apples for a long time but I don't have a calibrator for my monitor, so I can't help with that, but if you need help otherwise with your Mac, just let me know. I love the Mac and switch back and forth from PC (work) to Mac (home) just about every day.

Perhaps it's your printer and not your monitor that is the problem?

Thank you for your offer. I solved my problem by printing out of iPhoto rather than Elements. Put it on ColorSync and all is well.

Excellent photographs! I have found that the composition, lighting, and the photographer are the main ingredients for a great picture.A camera is only as good as the person behind it taking the picture. I often hear "Wow you must have a really nice camera, great pic". The way I see things, you wouldn't go to someones house for dinner and then compliment your host saying "Wow, great dinner, you must have really good pots and pans!". Although I think most people mean well when they compliment your equipment, by looking at these pictures, you can easly see that it is the artist with the eye for a great shot. Once again, great shots.

Fabulous photos! Agreed that point-and-shoot can rival SLR any day if you know how to compose a great shot, and you clearly do.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) gives annual awards in various categories for photographs illustrating science. One category last year was won by a photo taken with a P&S camera, and was used as the cover of Science, the journal-magazine of AAAS. Like Derek Ray, I'm always a little peeved by people who think my photos are due to a superior camera system. Equipment helps, esp. on certain kinds of photos (e.g., bird pictures), but the world's best camera in the hands of someone who has no eye for composition and lighting will invariably produce inferior pictures.

I also use a point and shoot Fujifilm finepix S5700 and get great shots, The only thing I dont like about it is when Im trying for distance shots, need a bigger zoom! But some of my best pics have been taken with this camera and I love it!
