Wow, it is hard to believe how quickly the summer is going by! In two months I will be back on the Florida Trail! I am excited to get back out on the adventure of exploring Florida.Posted on August 8, 2009 at 9:30am —
The hike today was my last hike for my first hiking season. The hike was a nice road hike between US 331 Trailhead and the Nokuse field entrance off of US 331. Although the hike was a roadwalk, the trail was offset from the road behind a row of trees, so I did not have to deal with walking on… Continue Posted on April 26, 2009 at 9:00am —
If I was to sum up the hike today in one word, it would be frustrating. It was enjoyable as usual to be out enjoying nature, but frustrating in that fact that I was unable to complete the hike I set out to do.Posted on April 18, 2009 at 9:00am —
The weather was just perfect today for a hike. A little cool with a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. I hiked slower than normal today, just relaxed and took it all in.Posted on April 12, 2009 at 3:30pm — 5 Comments
Today’s hike was fairly uneventful as far as seeing any wildlife. The hike was a leisurely 7 mile hike (3.5 miles each way) to Bull Campsite and back to the car. It was very humid when I started hiking, which made breathing a little more difficult.Posted on April 5, 2009 at 3:30pm — 1 Comment
Got up today before sunrise and started packing up to leave. I slept OK last night, but it was cold, so I did not sleep soundly. I would be warm in my sleeping bag, but then I would move into a different sleeping position and be cold again. It seemed like my sleeping bag would have pockets of col… Continue Posted on March 29, 2009 at 3:30pm —
Today’s hike was a little over 11 miles and it took me 7 hours to complete. When I arrived at the trail at sunrise, there was heavy rain and wind. I listened to the radio in the car, and there was a severe thunderstorm warning with flash floods, quarter-size hail, and lightning. I sat in the car… Continue Posted on March 28, 2009 at 3:30pm —
Last night I had trouble sleeping again, partly because it was too cold. I went to bed wearing very little thinking that I would be able to stay warm enough in my sleeping bag. After having trouble getting to sleep, I put on my long underwear top and bottom. I was still having trouble getting… Continue Posted on March 22, 2009 at 12:30pm — 1 Comment
Today was colder than I expected when I started my hike, so I had to change on the trail into my long underwear and gloves. It warmed up after a couple hours.Posted on March 21, 2009 at 12:00pm —
While in my tent last night trying to pass the time, I figured out how to set an alarm on my cell phone. My watch band broke while hiking last weekend. I set the alarm to wake me up a half hour before sunrise. Got everything packed up and started hiking at 8 a.m.Posted on March 15, 2009 at 11:00pm —
Today I hiked from the SR 85 trailhead into Eglin AFB reservation and setup camp at Jr. Walton Pond. Started hiking around 7 a.m. and made it to the pond about 5 hours later. The first 3 hours of the hike, it rained on and off. I brought my cameras, SPOT device, and GPS out of hiding once it w… Continue Posted on March 14, 2009 at 11:00pm — 1 Comment
Today was just about perfect temperature for hiking. I was able to wear shorts for the hike and it was a little cold starting out, but once I got moving, it was just right. I was quite hot and worn out by the end of my hike. As the day progressed, the temperature rose, and it was a roadwalk wi… Continue Posted on March 8, 2009 at 4:00pm — 1 Comment
The hike today is probably the coldest I have experienced. Although the temperature was between 40 - 44 degrees F the entire hike, it was the wind blowing at 20 MPH that made it feel very cold. There were many times I had to talk myself into stopping to take a picture as I didn’t want to stop… Continue Posted on March 1, 2009 at 2:30pm — 2 Comments
Today, Liz helped me with transportation today. We made good driving time out to the trail. The sun was just coming up when I started hiking at 6:30 a.m. I am hoping today will be the last day I will need to ask for Liz’s help driving me out to the trail. The rest of the hikes this spring are… Continue Posted on February 22, 2009 at 2:30pm —
Liz helped me with transportation today. We both drove out to Holt and dropped off a car, then we drove to Harold and I was dropped off to start the hike.Posted on February 15, 2009 at 8:30am —
I looked up the weather last night on the computer and they predicted the temperature to be about 40 degrees F around 6:30 a.m. I started hiking closer to 7 a.m. at the convenience store in the town of Harold. After a few minutes of hiking, I stopped and put on my gloves and ear warmers as it… Continue Posted on February 7, 2009 at 4:30pm — 1 Comment
Today’s hike was good for a road-walk, although it was cold starting out. When I started hiking at 7 a.m., the temperature was 32 degrees F. When I made it to my midway point at the Old Brick Highway, the temperature had warmed up to shed the ear and neck warmers, gloves, and jacket. Stopped f… Continue Posted on January 31, 2009 at 11:00pm —
Started my hike around 7:30 a.m. Would have started sooner, but had trouble finding the Hiker kiosk where I have to fill out a registration form letting Eglin know where I will be hiking. The map on CD from the FTA showed the kiosk being on SR 87 road, but it was actually on the trail close t… Continue Posted on January 24, 2009 at 11:30pm —
Woke up today about an hour before sunrise. Slept a little better in my tent last night than I have in the past, although I was still waking up about every 1 1/2 hours. Was able to get all packed up by sunrise and on the trail hiking back to the car.Posted on January 18, 2009 at 11:30am —
Today was a cold day when I started hiking (29 degrees F). It finally warmed up some as I started hiking.Posted on January 17, 2009 at 11:30am —

Wow You are very lucky! More power to you! When you get to my neck of the woods. Ocala National Forest. Your bucket list (which I think is a really great idea) can be filled in with the Black Bears, Sand Cranes, Gray Fox.....
There are Otters here too. Happy hiking! and good luck to you...
