Wow, it is hard to believe how quickly the summer is going by! In two months I will be back on the Florida Trail! I am excited to get back out on the adventure of exploring Florida.

I have finally put up some more videos and more will hopefully be available before I start hiking in October. A… Continue

Weekend 26 Hike - US 331 Trailhead to Field Entrance off US 331 (Eglin East)

The hike today was my last hike for my first hiking season. The hike was a nice road hike between US 331 Trailhead and the Nokuse field entrance off of US 331. Although the hike was a roadwalk, the trail was offset from the road behind a row of trees, so I did not have to deal with walking on… Continue

Weekend 25 Hike - US 331 Trailhead to Alaqua Campsite (Eglin East)

If I was to sum up the hike today in one word, it would be frustrating. It was enjoyable as usual to be out enjoying nature, but frustrating in that fact that I was unable to complete the hike I set out to do.

The hike started out well and I made it to Eglin Portal campsite in good time. My G… Continue

Weekend 24 Hike - Alaqua Trailhead to Alaqua Campsite (Eglin East)

The weather was just perfect today for a hike. A little cool with a slight breeze and not a cloud in the sky. I hiked slower than normal today, just relaxed and took it all in.

The majority of my filming today ended up being focused on birds. One thing I have learned from photographing birds is pa… Continue

Weekend 23 Hike - Alaqua Trailhead to Bull Campsite (Eglin East)

Today’s hike was fairly uneventful as far as seeing any wildlife. The hike was a leisurely 7 mile hike (3.5 miles each way) to Bull Campsite and back to the car. It was very humid when I started hiking, which made breathing a little more difficult.

I enjoyed the drive to this trailhead as it is a… Continue

Weekend 22 Hike (Day 2) - SR 285 Trailhead to Bull Campsite (Eglin East)

Got up today before sunrise and started packing up to leave. I slept OK last night, but it was cold, so I did not sleep soundly. I would be warm in my sleeping bag, but then I would move into a different sleeping position and be cold again. It seemed like my sleeping bag would have pockets of col… Continue

Weekend 22 Hike (Day 1) - SR 285 Trailhead to Bull Campsite (Eglin East)

Today’s hike was a little over 11 miles and it took me 7 hours to complete. When I arrived at the trail at sunrise, there was heavy rain and wind. I listened to the radio in the car, and there was a severe thunderstorm warning with flash floods, quarter-size hail, and lightning. I sat in the car… Continue

Weekend 21 Hike (Day 2) - SR 285 Trailhead to Jr. Walton Pond Campsite (Eglin North)

Last night I had trouble sleeping again, partly because it was too cold. I went to bed wearing very little thinking that I would be able to stay warm enough in my sleeping bag. After having trouble getting to sleep, I put on my long underwear top and bottom. I was still having trouble getting… Continue

Weekend 21 Hike (Day 1) - SR 285 Trailhead to Jr. Walton Pond Campsite (Eglin North)

Today was colder than I expected when I started my hike, so I had to change on the trail into my long underwear and gloves. It warmed up after a couple hours.

I spent some time trying to film this cool bug whose back wings looked just like a leaf. Had a hard time getting the camera to focus o… Continue

Weekend 20 Hike (Day 2) - SR 85 Trailhead to Jr. Walton Pond

While in my tent last night trying to pass the time, I figured out how to set an alarm on my cell phone. My watch band broke while hiking last weekend. I set the alarm to wake me up a half hour before sunrise. Got everything packed up and started hiking at 8 a.m.

Something I forgot to mentio… Continue

Weekend 20 Hike (Day 1) - SR 85 Trailhead to Jr. Walton Pond

Today I hiked from the SR 85 trailhead into Eglin AFB reservation and setup camp at Jr. Walton Pond. Started hiking around 7 a.m. and made it to the pond about 5 hours later. The first 3 hours of the hike, it rained on and off. I brought my cameras, SPOT device, and GPS out of hiding once it w… Continue

Weekend 19 Hike - Crestview to SR 85 Trailhead

Today was just about perfect temperature for hiking. I was able to wear shorts for the hike and it was a little cold starting out, but once I got moving, it was just right. I was quite hot and worn out by the end of my hike. As the day progressed, the temperature rose, and it was a roadwalk wi… Continue

Weekend 18 Hike - Crestview to Milligan

The hike today is probably the coldest I have experienced. Although the temperature was between 40 - 44 degrees F the entire hike, it was the wind blowing at 20 MPH that made it feel very cold. There were many times I had to talk myself into stopping to take a picture as I didn’t want to stop… Continue

Weekend 17 Hike - Holt to Milligan (Eglin North)

Today, Liz helped me with transportation today. We made good driving time out to the trail. The sun was just coming up when I started hiking at 6:30 a.m. I am hoping today will be the last day I will need to ask for Liz’s help driving me out to the trail. The rest of the hikes this spring are… Continue

Weekend 16 Hike - Harold to Holt (Eglin West)

Liz helped me with transportation today. We both drove out to Holt and dropped off a car, then we drove to Harold and I was dropped off to start the hike.

I think I startled the cashier when I entered the convenience store today with all my backpacking gear on. Since I am not much of a conver… Continue

Weekend 15 Hike - Harold to Old Brick Highway West (Eglin West)

I looked up the weather last night on the computer and they predicted the temperature to be about 40 degrees F around 6:30 a.m. I started hiking closer to 7 a.m. at the convenience store in the town of Harold. After a few minutes of hiking, I stopped and put on my gloves and ear warmers as it… Continue

Weekend 14 Hike - Yellow River Trailhead to Old Brick Highway West (Eglin West)

Today’s hike was good for a road-walk, although it was cold starting out. When I started hiking at 7 a.m., the temperature was 32 degrees F. When I made it to my midway point at the Old Brick Highway, the temperature had warmed up to shed the ear and neck warmers, gloves, and jacket. Stopped f… Continue

Weekend 13 Hike - SR 87 to Yellow River Trailhead (Eglin West)

Started my hike around 7:30 a.m. Would have started sooner, but had trouble finding the Hiker kiosk where I have to fill out a registration form letting Eglin know where I will be hiking. The map on CD from the FTA showed the kiosk being on SR 87 road, but it was actually on the trail close t… Continue

Weekend 12 Hike (Day 2) - East Bay Trailhead to SR 87 (Eglin West)

Woke up today about an hour before sunrise. Slept a little better in my tent last night than I have in the past, although I was still waking up about every 1 1/2 hours. Was able to get all packed up by sunrise and on the trail hiking back to the car.

Had to hike in the opposite direction for… Continue

Weekend 12 Hike (Day 1) - East Bay Trailhead to SR 87 (Eglin West)

Today was a cold day when I started hiking (29 degrees F). It finally warmed up some as I started hiking.

Came across a FNST sign and a hiker sign that were both shot to pieces by a hunter. When I arrived at the hiker kiosk at the entrance of Eglin, there were two bullet holes in the kiosk.… Continue

Hi Joel,
Wow You are very lucky! More power to you! When you get to my neck of the woods. Ocala National Forest. Your bucket list (which I think is a really great idea) can be filled in with the Black Bears, Sand Cranes, Gray Fox.....
There are Otters here too. Happy hiking! and good luck to you...

Hey Joel. Thanks for the nice compliments on my photography. You have a great talent for videography. Ever consider a Florida Trail Documentary? I see that you plan to section hike the entire FT. Please leave me a comment when you plan to come by and hike the south east.Maybe I can share some good places for views and scenery.
