Mosquito Lagoon rocks! Those mullet look like comets racing through the water. A truly magical experience, and a must-do for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.

It really depends on what type of camping I am doing. There are many times when weight is the determining factor and other times when it is not as critical, usually depending on the length of the hike and the terrain. No one shelter is best for all…

More Summertime Water Adventure

This past weekend I visited with some friends from Melbourne and had an opportunity to experience the spectacular phenomena of bioluminescence in the waters of Mosquito Lagoon, near Titusville. We arrived at sunset at a boat launch on Haulover Canal, located in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge where we put in our canoe and kayak. We paddled east on the canal toward Mosquito Lagoon, passing numerous anchored vessels along the way, with fishing lines in the water, a testimonial to the a… Continue

Getting out on the water

Last month Sandra posed the question as a discussion item …”what do you do in the summertime?” As I noted then I try to get out and enjoy some of the water activities like canoeing and kayaking. This past weekend I had a great trip on two rivers and one creek as well as camping outdoors at a Florida State Park. The trip was planned a couple of months back between myself and a fellow hiker and kayaker from Melbourne, Lisa Myers, also a Florida Trails Association member and Activity Leader in the… Continue

What lurks in that swamp?

I took the opportunity today to go with a couple of friends to Durbin Creek Swamp in southeast Duval County. Our crew assembled for this scouting expedition in an effort to locate ancient cypress trees. All four of us are recreational tree climbers and we decided to survey a specific area of the swamp where we suspected we might find a few of these magnificent old trees. Our idea was to go in kayaks and canoes while the water was up from the recent rains, and return for a climb at some time in t… Continue
