ONF is on my list to visit in October. I always go there in the cooler months. I hiked there in the summer, but the deer flies always want to eat me alive. I don't do well camping in the heat.

Has anybody tasted Hog Plum before? I am so tempted to try the yellow ones in the scub areas. How about the ripe Saw Palmetto berries? Smells live a strong olive.

Could be Hog Plum, but not the Hog Plum you find in Scrub areas. The fruit is yellow... The leaves really don't match..

I've been back there too, years ago with a botanist. Tons of hand ferns. I wish that area would be preserved.

Scripps is huge! I am pretty sure they will develop on the land. I can't believe how many Hand Ferns are in this area. I never saw a area with that many in such a small space. It will be a shame! That whole area was all woods and only 5-6 years ago.

Camping Gear

As I was planning for this 4 day Paddling trip thru the 10,000 Islands. I started to noticed I have 3 different types of gear for camping. I was wondering if everybody else out there does the same thing?

Luxury camping: This usually involves camping at places with water and electric. I bring pretty much everything I can with me. When I first started camping, I found myself bringing a bare minimum camping at these spots. Then I got a

Italian Farms is accessible via Riverbend. Go under Indiantown Road on the Ocean-to-Lake and look for the first train turnoff on the right. It's marked. It's the old Ocean-to-Lake, an out and back hike, ends near the Turnpike & Lox River.

Hey Chris, it's not like that at all. When I post that I'm heading somewhere, I'm hoping that someone / everyone will want to tag along. Hiking alone has its place with me, but not all the time; it gets old. You and everybody else are always welcome. My logic is; if I don't post about a trip, I want to go alone. If I post, bring the crew!

Regarding the trail, I wound up heading south after crossing the south Kitching Creek Bridge. I did this segment once before in the middle of the summer and hated it. Yesterday, with that cool breeze in spite of being in the 80's, made it nice. The bummer was the trip back. After making it to Hobe Bridge, I turned around to find that the the park maintenance crew tilled the entire trail. It was a miserable couple of miles in ankle busting ruts. At best, I was averaging 1 mph. They should put up a dry erase sign at the gate indicating what/ where trail work is being performed. I'm going to call them to recommend.

Thanks a lot! My copy of Sandra's book arrived yesterday afternoon also, so I should be prepared for my first "real" hike on a major trail. I am hoping to do this this weekend. You mentioned extra water -- I have one 2L hydration pack. What's the best way to carry more water? Should I bring a filtration unit?

Hi footTRAX. I am guessing you would know, in terms of hours, how long does it take to do the East Trail Loop at JD? Thanks!
