Migration progress

Hello, everyone! Just checking in now that the main website is migrated. It took a lot longer than we planned, but we're happy with the results. And yes, this is all still just me and John working on the back-end stuff. Next step is to move this forum. I found a piece of software that's supposed to let us copy everything over from this location to our new one. It may be a few weeks until we can get to it due to some other time-critical projects. However, I wanted to give you a…See More

Taking a walk in the woods

Hi guys! Bricky is handling moderation these days as I'm packing up for a long walk in the woods: I'm headed out to thru-hike the AT very soon. I'll post a few updates now and again on the Florida Hikes blog. Help each other out while I'm gone and catch you on the flip side of my trek!

Torn between two sites ...

Okay, gang, it's obvious you find this site easier to use, and I get it ... ;-) So ... I'm going to keep it rolling (although it does run me $20 per month, so I'll add a donate button for those who want to pitch in) and do some sprucing up.

On the site, I'll tie these two together best I can. I'll be adding commenting soon to FloridaHikes, so registered members there can add comments. Also need to streamline the content submission stuff, it's tricky. Much tech to… Continue

Here we go! Florida Hikes on the move

I'm ready to move base camp for Florida Hikes to a new server and new software. It won't affect the forums here ... yet. My plan is for us to all transition over there into the integrated forums over the next month or so. Meanwhile, if you're popping into the website to check things, it might be down intermittently as the changes ripple across the web. You ought to be out hiking, anyway!

Will keep you posted. The biggest changes:

1) Find trails easily by zooming into a map of… Continue

Florida hiker died on the Appalachian Trail

Just saw this news story about a 60-year-old Florida hiker found dead on the Appalachian Trail. They mention he was complaining in a journal (TrailJournals, perhaps?) about medical issues. A heads-up in case anyone knows this person, whose name has not yet been released.

My Florida State Parks app is now available on iTunes

I'm dashing out of here to be a part of my first Relay for Hike, but wanted to let you all know that on Earth Day, Apple released my comprehensive Florida State Parks iPhone app! It works on iPad, too, and is the guidebook I wanted to write - but didn't - a couple of years ago when I realized just how out of date "Florida State Parks" the guidebook is. This is a more fun and helpful way of presenting the same information, given the built-in GPS, ability for multimedia, and the fact that users… Continue

Hey Sandra,

I was thinking about heading to Ocala in a few weeks for a day hike...I know you know that area, I was wondering at what time does it become "too hot, even for Floridians?"

Thanks so much

Thank you ... I've missed ya!  We've done a little hiking but not nearly enough.  It was part of my New Years Resolution to get back out there =)

oh by the way, in case you were wondering what kinda decent chef finds himself off work on a friday night, I have only found work so far as a breakfast cook, slinging hash and eggs benedict for the fighting 4077. lol, mash reference. but yeah thats what had me home on a friday night. making good money at it tho and i do enjoy getting the work outta the way in the morning and getting off work in time to hop in my kayak for an hour or so.

pretty versatile with my cooking. at the last restaurant i worked in up in michigan i did a sushi night but enjoy adding new levels to traditional fare. something like parmesean and pistachio encrusted swordfish with roasted red pepper puree and a wasabi mash potato, something along those lines. my brother heads the history deppartment at USF, is a fellow foodie, does occasional reviews for creative loafing and wrote a book about Ybor's Colombia restaurant. im a foodie as well but a bit less refined, a bit more adventurous. did a dynamite (i thought) glazed ham for christmas, a 4 part 2 wet, 2 dry glaze of brandy (sprayed on with a water bottle), brown sugar, brown mustard, and crushed ginger snaps. it was good. and Jesus wept.
